Informal labels for groups with different views on AI. They are widely used, often loosely, and sometimes as insults.

Doomer: someone who thinks advanced AI has a high chance of causing human extinction or permanent catastrophe. The label is usually applied by critics; many people with these concerns reject it and describe themselves as worried about existential risk.
Accelerationist, or e/acc (effective accelerationism): someone who believes faster AI progress is overwhelmingly good and that most safety concerns are overblown, or serve as cover for incumbents who want regulation that protects them. The e/acc movement emerged online in 2022 and drew wide attention in 2023.
AI ethics vs. AI safety: a long-running split between two research communities. AI ethics has focused on present-day harms such as bias, surveillance, labor exploitation, misinformation, and the concentration of corporate power. AI safety has focused more on risks from future, more capable systems, including loss of control. The two have often clashed over priorities and funding, though many people now work across both.
